(AP) -- JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- About one of every seven Missouri lawmakers has unclaimed property waiting for them in the capital, and many may not even know it.

The names of 28 state lawmakers and two congressmen show up in the state treasurer's online unclaimed property database.

The treasurer's office holds the contents of bank accounts, stocks, bonds, insurance policies or safety deposit boxes that have had no contact with the owner for at least five years. The property is returned when people or their descendants claim it.

Treasurer's office spokesman Jon Galloway said the state is currently holding over $600 million in unclaimed property. He said one in 10 Missourians have assets held by the state.
