JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri's top two executives are taking a starkly different approach in presenting their messages to the people.
In his State of the State address last week, Gov. Jay Nixon used words such as "we" "us" "our" and "together" more than 200 times. The Democratic governor emphasized how he and the Republican-led Legislature have been working together to improve the state.
In his Republican response speech, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder also used pronouns such as "we." But he did so to emphasize how Nixon's policies are in opposition to "we" the people or the Republican party. Kinder's criticisms included 40 references to Nixon -- about one for every 15 seconds of his speech.
