MEXICO -- This has been one of the coldest weeks in recent history.
However, there is a one place on Mexico’s Square that never gets frigid despite the weather.
Even though the wind chills are below zero at times, you can always warm up at Mexico’s Hot Diggity.
Tom and Cindy Roberts opened this gourmet hotdog and sandwich shop a couple of months ago.
The Hot Diggity name comes from the old TV show, The Beverly Hillbillies. A character named Jethro always used to say “Hot Diggity!” and that phrase goes perfect with hot dogs and the Mexico community.
“We have lived here since 1994," Cindy said. "We really love this community. We love the people in this community. We want to see Mexico thrive. We want to be a part of that. That was one of the reasons why we chose this area.”
Hot Diggity has a 50’s theme but the music is blues and jazz. Tom Roberts plays his Hot Diggity guitar with friends on the third Friday night of every month. Tom said it’s his way of giving back to the Mexico community.
“Everybody needs to come in and enjoy a great hot dog," Tom said. "You have the opportunity to support a local business. Hopefully, it’s going to draw to the other merchants in the community as well and the small community around the square.”
Tom and Cindy said their gourmet dogs at Hot Diggity have the widest variety of toppings in the state of Missouri. There is a lot to choose from. Tom said his favorite is his chili cheese hot dog with onions. If you order one of these, make sure you don’t wear a white shirt.
Take it from Shirley Hill and her friends. They say Hot Diggity dog with every bite.
“I think it’s very good, very good," Shirley said. "It’s different from our other restaurants and kind of fun to do. I think it will be a good addition for Mexico.”
Mexico’s Hot Diggity Gourmet Hot Dog Shop is open every day except Sunday.
