JEFFERSON CITY -- The Jefferson City council last night approved a resolution agreeing to put a new shelter at the Hyde Park complex. It would replace the cramped quarters at the existing shelter.
City Administrator Steve Rassmussen said the council's decision is important because an architect will likely be chosen at the next council meeting and a private group has started raising funds for the new shelter.
It's expected to cost at least a million and a half dollars.
Taxpayers will pick up part of the tab, and private donors the rest. It could be complete by June of 2011.
Also at last night's meeting, the council tabled two controversial proposals because some council members were absent.
One would allow tattoo and body piercing businesses to set up shop. The other would set aside money to help low income residents pay for the new mandatory trash and recycling program. The council will pick up the discussion again on January 19th.
