JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Missouri officials have proposed mixing shops and state buildings on land where gangsters and killers were once held.
State and local officials on Wednesday unveiled a blueprint for developing the roughly 140-acre site of the Missouri State Penitentiary on a river bluff east of the state Capitol.
The petitionary was closed in 2004 and had been the oldest continuing operating prison west of the Mississippi River.
A new federal courthouse already is being built and is scheduled to open in 2011.
For the remaining land, officials plan more than 70 acres for state facilities and 30 acres for businesses and other private developments.
A smaller portion is to be set aside for historical preservation.
It's unknown how much the redevelopment will cost.
