POPLAR BLUFF, MO. (AP) -- Poplar Bluff has become the latest Missouri town to adopt a rule aimed at fighting the scourge of methamphetamine.

The Daily American Republic reports that Poplar Bluff has joined the towns of Washington and Union, and Jefferson County - all outside St. Louis - to require a prescription to purchase cold and allergy medications containing pseudoephedrine, a meth ingredient.

The southeast Missouri town's city council adopted the rule on Monday and it took effect Tuesday.

Police Chief Danny Whiteley predicts the measure will have immediate results in fighting methamphetamine manufacturing and use.

Some at Monday's meeting said the rule would create an inconvenience, but others said it was worth it to save a life.
