JEFFERSON CITY -- If you're in the giving spirit this holiday season and you donate to some of Missouri's food pantries, you can get a tax break.

If you donate food or money to a pantry that distributes food to the needy, you can claim half your donation back from Uncle Sam. Most food banks are eligible as well.

"Most food banks have food pantries also so most of the time you're gonna be able to give a donation that's eligible under the tax credit,” said Ted Farnen, spokesperson for the Dept. of Revenue.

The tax credit is for half the donation up to $5,000.

With the holiday season in mind, it's also important to be aware of what you're donating to other charities as well.

"Get all your receipts together, as much as possible for the charities that you've given to throughout the year and that way you'll be ready when the tax year begins,” said Farnen.

It's also important to pay attention to when you make your tax-deductible gift to make sure you can claim it for the current tax year.
