COLUMBIA -- Columbia police have released the name of the Walmart employee shot as he returned from break Monday morning.
Investigators say Ken Jacobs, 54, of Ashland was shot four times as he walked back to the Conley Road Walmart, near the Intersate70/Highway 63 connector.
Jacobs' condition has been upgraded to fair.
Police say two men wearing ski masks approached Jacobs and demanded money. When he refused they opened fire.
Police found six .22 caliber rifle shells at the scene.
Police are also looking for a third suspect.
Surveillance video confirmed a third person drove the getaway car. Investigators tell us the shooting itself was not caught on camera.
Police are concerned because the victim in the Walmart shooting was chosen at random.
They say you can lower your risk of being the next target by following simple safety measures:
-Shop during daylight hours and if you must shop at night, shop with another person.
-Avoid overloading yourself with packages, so you can stay alert to your surroundings and react quickly.
-Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason.
-At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you to get to your money or belongings.
