JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A Missouri state lawmaker says he's been interviewed by the FBI about why colleagues failed to act this year on legislation affecting city sales tax rates.
Republican House member Tim Jones, of Eureka, told The Associated Press on Monday that the FBI contacted him about a month ago.
Jones had sponsored legislation allowing cities to continue charging multiple sales taxes. At the time, some cities were facing lawsuits contending the practice was illegal.
Jones' legislation was endorsed by a committee he leads. But House Speaker Ron Richard never referred it the Rules Committee, which would have been the next step. Richard says he held up the bill because House Majority Leader Steve Tilley opposed it.
Jones says he doesn't believe colleagues did anything improper in halting his bill.
