COLUMBIA -- The interim leader of the Central Missouri Humane Society starts today.

The shelter's board selected Columbia veterinarian Alan Allert as temporary executive director while the board looks for a permanent leader.

Former director, Patty Forister surprised the board by resigning during a meeting last week. Forister is credited with helping the shelter win a contest for a million dollar makeover. She also asked the Columbia City Council for additional funding.

Earlier this month, shelter board members released a report that cited operational and administrative deficiencies under Forister's leadership.

Forister cited personal and professional reasons for her resignation.
