GM selling 20,000 new cars online

LINN -- It's a strategy calculated to generate "positive feedback" if consumers will "buy it now."

In an effort to spark consumer interest, General Motors has partnered with eBay to sell 20,000 new cars online. They launched three cobranded Web sites Tuesday.

The troubled automaker is selling new Buick, Chevrolet, GMC and Pontiac's online. Their slogan: "Our best cars. Your best offer." It's been referred to as a "virtual car lot," a place where potential buyers can go to browse and bid on the latest models.

Consumers can ask questions, find out if they qualify for rebates and figure out financing - all without leaving their living room. GM, which just emerged from bankruptcy, is hoping this will help jumpstart sales.

"I think GM is just trying to get creative," said Mike Carroll, with Caroll-Rhema Motors in Linn. "And explore some opportunities that may have not been explored yet."

Carroll sells GM cars for a living. While he says this could be a good "shopping tool," he doesn't think it can replace local dealerships.

"Ultimately, I still think with all the hidden costs and things that are out there," said Carroll. "It's good to see it on paper in front of the dealer."

Right now this is just a test program starting in California. If you buy a car, it will come from a California dealer.  The state was chosen for the trial because GM wants to increase sales there, which are 6 percent below the national average.

While Golden State consumers try to bargain for better deals, there's a caveat for Missouri consumers: Unless you're willing to pick up that new car in person, you'll probably incur massive shipping fees.

If it spreads nationwide, GM is hoping this could change the way consumers shop for cars.
