WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Democrats could add billions of additional dollars targeting infrastructure projects to the economic stimulus package. Money for highway projects alone could get an almost 50 percent boost, to $40 billion.

It comes even as others in the president's party hope to rein-in the plan's almost $1 trillion cost to taxpayers.

The additional funding comes as Republicans as well as some Democrats say the pricetag is too high.

GOP lawmakers will push alternative proposals aimed at helping struggling homeowners first and foremost. Their hope is to reduce the cost of mortgages and get bigger tax credits to more homebuyers.
