CAPE GIRARDEAU (AP) -- Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin gets a rousing welcome in Cape Girardeau.
The Alaska governor and running mate of John McCain spoke to several thousand enthusiastic people at the Show Me Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. The arena holds a little more than 7,000 people and was full. In fact, hundreds more watched on closed circuit TV in an adjoining recreation center.
Palin told the crowd that McCain will fix the economy, lead America to victory in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and help the country move toward energy independence.
Polls show McCain and Democrat Barack Obama in a virtual dead heat in Missouri. Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden, both are appearing elsewhere in Missouri today.
