A dedicated volunteer was honored with a surprise presentation Thursday afternoon.

Central Missouri Community Action administrators gave Wanda Fischer their Volunteer of the Year Award.

Fischer started volunteering at Columbia’s Bear Creek Head Start Preschool in April 2011.

The retired grandmother gave more than 300 hours of her time to preschoolers.

She was chosen from more than 1,660 volunteers from eight mid-Missouri counties.

"To see them grow up and develop their little personalities and just to be a part of that process was the rewarding part,” she said.

Fischer gave up volunteering at the Bear Creek Head Start Preschool so she could spend more time with her newborn granddaughter.
