(AP) -- JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri's Senate candidates both have a role in overseeing the nation's military -- and both say they have some concerns about foreign policy.

Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee while Republican Representative Todd Akin sits on the House Armed Services Committee.

Akin contends that President Barack Obama has been "leading from behind" on matters involving national security and international threats. As an example, he says that Obama has been deferential to Russia in responding to the fighting in Syria that has killed more than 30,000 people.

McCaskill is also critical of some of Obama's foreign policies. As an example, she cites her support for "severe sanctions" on the Bank of Iran, which she says passed over the objections of Obama.
