Update: Friday, May 18 at 5:43 p.m.:

The Highway Patrol said the woman killed in a Friday morning wreck was Twila Stokes, 52, of Columbia.

Troopers said the collision happened when Stokes turned onto the shoulder of Route B and abruptly attempted to turn left to make an illegal U-turn. She did this in front of a van that was traveling behind her.

The van T-boned Stokes, hitting her directly in the driver door.

A passenger in Stokes’s vehicle suffered moderate injuries. The driver of the van had minor injuries.

Original Story:

One woman is dead and two people are injured after a T-bone accident just north of Columbia this morning.

The crash happened near the intersection of Route B and Mount Zion Church Road.

Authorities say the middle-aged woman was driving a Honda Accord with a passenger in the front seat when a driver of a box van struck the driver’s side door.

There were no major skid marks on the road and that leads investigators to think the woman was doing a u-turn and caused the crash.

The official cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Gale Blomenkamp, bureau director of the Boone County Fire Protection District, said, "She was pinned in that vehicle on the driver’s side. Once we got the passenger victim out and the medical examiners did their investigation, we were able to remove the console of that vehicle and the fatality victim out of the passenger door."

Authorities closed Route B for about two hours this morning because of the accident.

The passenger of the car and the driver of the box van were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
