About 700 employees at facilities in Boonville and Poplar Bluff will be affected when NORDYNE relocates its split system and furnace manufacturing lines to Saltillo, Mexico.
The Boonville plant, which employs about 200 people, opened in 1979 and the Poplar Bluff facility, which employs about 500 people, opened in 2001.
"Moving production was an incredibly difficult decision given the impact to our employees and to the Missouri communities," Dave LaGrand, president and CEO of NORDYNE, said. "But the long-term viability and competitiveness of NORDYNE will be greatly enhanced by this strategic business move."
A transition plan for impacted employees includes severance pay, extended health insurance coverage and outplacement services through local resources. All employees will receive a 60-day notice of termination.
"We are committed to minimizing the impact on our employees and helping them through this transition," LaGrand said.
The transition will begin early next year, and the new facility should be operating at full capacity by the end of 2015. NORDYNE officials told us they're breaking ground on the Mexico plant in three weeks.
A plant in Dyersburg, Tenn., will still be used to manufacture select heating and cooling systems. It opened in 2003.
