Fire crews quickly put out a small fire that started in the attic of 1404 Hickory Street early Wednesday evening.

The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched at 5:08 p.m. and, upon arrival three minutes later, saw smoke coming from the attic and eaves.

The fire was knocked down within minutes. Crews then spent another 40 minutes checking over the area and clearing smoke from the house.

The assistant fire marshal, Lieutenant Lisa Todd, said the fire began in the attic, although the exact cause is undetermined.

Damage is estimated at $5,000.

The home had working smoke alarms that alerted the two adult occupants to the fire.
