Site tours of the three locations will occur on January 26
A nine-month search for the site of a new elementary school has turned up three possibilities:
- Scott Boulevard and Route KK (34 acres)
- Route K and Old Plank Road (36 acres)
- Route K and Highpoint Lane (30 acres)
Columbia Public Schools' Long-range Facilities Planning Committee and the Board of Education have been working with local realtor John John to review properties and land proposal options.
After looking at 14 options, the three finalists were chosen based on available acreage, location, proximity of major roadways, level of site development and the owner's willingness to sell.
Site tours of the three locations will occur on January 26. The committee can then begin more formal site evaluations, using engineering and environmental surveys. These surveys include location, size and shape of the property, cultural resources, environmental impairments and traffic signals.
The new school is scheduled to open in 2016, with funding from bond funds approved in the April 2012 bond issue election. Another elementary school, set to open in 2015 and funded with bond funds from the same bond issue election, is being designed and will be adjacent to Battle High School.
