Smoking ban in House offices snuffed out

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- A committee rejected a proposal to ban smoking in Missouri House members' Capitol offices.
The vote was eight to four. All eight "no" votes were from Republicans, while all four "yes" votes were from Democrats.
House Democrats have agreed that their offices will be smoke-free. They attempted to have everyone follow suit by including it in the official House rules.
Mokane Republican Jeanie Riddle, the Rules Committee Chairwoman, said House members should be able to decide their own office policies.
Smoking is already prohibited in the hallways and chamber while lawmakers are in session.
