BOONE COUNTY, Mo. -- Crews from the Southern Boone Fire District responded to a large fire Saturday afternoon just east of Columbia Regional Airport.

Crews arrived to a fully-engulfed barn just off East Englwood Road, where they also found over 150 bails of hay on fire.

The owner of the property was the first one who found to fire, but he had a little trouble calling 9-1-1 at first.

"Him and another buddy tried to put it out with a garden hose,” said Brice Nichols, Public Information Officer for Southern Boone Fire District. “They first tried to call 9-1-1; couldn't get any reception out here. So they had to go up the road where they could get a signal and finally call."

That call finally came in around 4 p.m.

The barn was reported as a total loss, but no one was injured in the fire.
