Lincoln University in Jefferson City will get a million dollars in Community Development Block Grant money to develope a new information technology program.

In a visit to the LU campus Wednesday (8/1), Governor Jay Nixon announced a new round of grants for the "Innovation Campus" effort in Missouri.

"The idea of the innovation campus is very simple," Nixon said. "Missouri's colleges and universities will work with local non-profit and government groups, business partners, school districts, and other organizations to prepare students for careers in high-demand fields... while cutting the time it takes to earn a degree, thus reducing student debt."

The Lincoln money will help to train I-T students at the high school level.

Area businesses will design course work and provide real-world mentoring and work opportunities.

That will allow students to get college credit while sill in high school.

"It really marries up with the plans that we're already putting in place for our transition to career academies," Jefferson City School District Superintendent Brian Mitchell said.  "And it's really giving our kids an opportunity to have a closer relationship with our business community."

Linn State Technical College and Helias Catholic High School are also involved.

The governor named Central Bank and a number of other businesses as partners.

Other campuses around the state, including Missouri S&T in Rolla, will divide another $8 million in similar grants.
