JEFFERSON CITY -- Updated: Tuesday, July 10, at 8:50 a.m.:

Jefferson City Division Chief Jason Turner said damages from the fire are estimated to be between $75,000 and $80,000.

A family of two adults and three children who lived in the upstairs apartment was displaced, along with another adult who lived below them.

Original Story:

Authorities are investigating an early morning apartment fire in Jefferson City that left five people homeless.

The fire happened at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at apartments in the 200 block of Pine Street.

Flames were visible when crews got to the scene, and there was smoke coming out of the windows.

"When first-arriving companies arrived, they found fire on the second floor, made an interior attack, did a primary search of the building to determine if anybody was in it," Jefferson City Division Chief Jason Turner said.

Two Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter volunteers from Cole County are helping a family of five who lived in one of the apartments on Pine Street.

The Red Cross said volunteers provided resources for the family to purchase food, clothing and shoes, and also got them a two-night stay in a local motel and comfort kits, which contain personal hygiene items.

No foul play is suspected.
