A program that's the first of its kind in the county is underway in Jefferson City to educate DWI offenders.

The city and Preferred Family Healthcare have teamed up to provide a virtual DWI program, where offenders can meet up online in a 3-D world and undergo several types of counseling.

Designers stress that the program is aimed strictly at education for first-time offenders.

"This is a chance for somebody that has just entered into this legal system by making one alcohol-related mistake, and being able to do an education program without being thrown into actual treatment itself," said Jared Torbet, a designer for the project at Preferred Family Healthcare.

The program is not funded with taxpayer money. Offenders pay a fee of $375 to use the program.
