President Obama said Wednesday what no other president has said before - that same sex marriage should be legal.
People we talked to Wednesday evening say the president's view on gay marriage won't affect them.
Same-sex marriage is not legal in Missouri.
Most said they think it's simply a personal choice and is an issue for states to decide.
Erik Moegling of Columbia said, "It's the year 2012 get over it".
President Obama declared his support of gay marriage Wednesday morning on ABC's Good Morning America, "I've just concluded for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that i think same sex couples should be able to get married".
The president faced mounting pressure to weigh in on the subject.
Tuesday, North Carolina passed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages.
Missourians did the same thing back in 2004.
Up until now President Obama had supported many rights for same sex couples but on marriage would only say that his position was evolving, “I've hesitated on gay marriage in part becasue I thought civil unions would be sufficient that that was something that would give people hospital visitation rights and other elements that we take for granted”.
In Mid Missouri, people differed on what the president's stance meant to them.
Erik Moegling said, "I've got a lot of gay friends, who cares if they hanging out, what you do is what you do, they aren't trying to puch it on other people, it's just people doing what they do".
Camille Foster told us, "I think it's really great because a lot of presidents haven't really spoken out for it, they've always been so against it so I think it's really great".
But, Tawnya River had a different view, "It's his decision ultimately if he supports it or not but for me as a Christian I don't".
Mitt Romney said Wednesday he believes marriage is between a man and a woman and states should decide for themselves.
