Woman in critical condition after being hit by car in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Columbia police are reporting that a woman is in criticial condition after being hit by car Monday evening at the intersection of College Avenue and North Windsor Street in Columbia.

Police report that Janet Barnes was crossing College Avenue in a motorized wheelchair, when she failed to yield to traffic. That's when driver Lea Wood was traveling on the street and could not stop in time to avoid hitting Barnes.

Barnes was transported on scene by EMS to University Hospital, where she is being listed in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing, although police don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident.
