COLUMBIA, MO. -- Update: 4:21 p.m. on Jan. 27:

Columbia police said a suspected drug dealer is in jail after a man, 22, died from an apparent heroin overdose on Monday.

Police arrested Ellison Hutchison, 36, on Wednesday morning after linking him to the crime.

Police aren’t releasing the name of the victim who was dead when officers arrived at his home Monday night in the 500 block of Williams Street.  Investigators believe the man died from a heroin overdose because of puncture wounds in his arm and wrist.  On Wednesday morning, evidence led police to arrest Ellison “Lucky” Hutchison without incident in the driveway of his home on Brampton Court just outside of the Columbia city limits.

Investigators used a search warrant to check the records of the victim’s phone.  They found text messages sent between the victim and Hutchison that described plans for a drug deal.

Police arrested Hutchison for a felony warrant of distributing a controlled substance.  He could face more charges after authorities get the autopsy results of the apparent overdose victim.

Columbia police officer Latisha Stroer said, “We have seen an increase in heroin usage.  Surrounding counties have also seen it.”

Hutchison remains in the Boone County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Court records show Hutchison was also involved with a car crash that killed a Columbia man 2 years ago.

Hutchison was never charged with a crime related to that crash.

Original Story:

Columbia Police said a man is in jail after another man died from an apparent drug overdose.

Officers responded Monday at 9:38 p.m. to the 500 block of North Williams for an unresponsive male. Officers said the 22-year-old man was dead when they arrived, from an apparent drug overdose. Police said the man had two fresh puncture wounds on his arm and wrist consistent with intravenous drug usage.

Police said they also found evidence of recent intravenous drug use like syringes, suspected heroin and additional paraphernalia related to heroin.  When a search warrant was obtained, officers went through the man's phone. They found text messages between the deceased man and Ellison Hutchison Jr. regarding a meeting for a drug exchange.

Wednesday morning around 8:30, officers with the Columbia Police Department and the Boone County Sheriff's Department arrested Hutchison on a felony warrant of distributing a controlled substance with a bond amount of $100,000.

Police said their investigation continues.
