The cold and nasty weather that hit Missouri Tuesday morning was just a little taste of winter, there could be a lot more of that in the coming months.

So with the wintery cold season just starting are homeless shelters starting to fill up?

KRCG talked with the Jefferson City's Salvation Army Center of Hope director to find out.

The Salvation Army's Center of Hope Shelter offers people a warm home year round.

But on many cold nights, when the temperature dips below 40 degrees, workers at the shelter bring out additional mattresses and cots to take in even more people.

"We have anywhere between two to six people spend the night with us because of the cold weather. As the weather continues to get colder and colder it can go up to fifteen,” Salvation Army's Center of Hope Shelter Director Deborah Goldman said.

Some of the residents at the shelter told me they're grateful to have a warm place to stay.

Goldman said this time of year can be a very scary time for people living on the street.

"It takes a very short amount of time for individuals to freeze in this kind of weather and also get hypothermia. I would really like for people at home to understand the importance of having a shelter here in this community,” Goldman said.

Goldman asks that if you know anyone who is homeless and needs a place to get out of the cold. To send them to the Salvation Army's Center of Hope Shelter.
