10/20/68 Jackie Kennedy Weds Aristotle Onassis

On this day in history, October 20, 1968, former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis on his private island of Skorpios. At the time of the marriage, Jackie was 39 years old. Onassis claimed to be 62, yet his passport read 68.

Twenty-one guests crowded into the small chapel for the 45-minute Greek Orthodox ceremony. Emerging from the chapel into a torrential downpour, a sign of good luck in Greek folklore, the wedding party made their way to the "Christina," Onassis' personal yacht for an all-night reception.

Both the Onassis children objected to their father's marriage.

The couple divided their time between New York, Athens, Paris, Montevideo, Monte Carlo and the Greek islands.
