This Day in History 10/11/02 Jimmy Carter wins the Nobel Prize

On this day in history, Oct. 11, 2002, Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Some of his accomplishments in foreign policy included the Camp David accords peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, his work on the Salt II Treaty.

He was also known for his humanitarian work.

He and his wife, Rosalynn, are also well-known for their work as volunteers with habitat for humanity.

This Day in History 10/11/84 First American Woman Spacewalk

Also on this day in history, October 11, 1984, space shuttle "Challenger" Astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan became the first American woman to walk in space.

The occasion was part of an eight day mission aboard the shuttle with the purpose of studying the earth's land formations, ocean and weather patterns.

The 7 person crew aboard the craft included Sally Ride. It was her second journey into space.
