Update: Wednesday, July 20th at 11:05 a.m.:

Animals at the Jefferson City Animal Shelter will soon have a new place to call home.

Community leaders, with the help of some four legged friends, broke ground Wednesday morning at the site for the new shelter off Hyde Park Road.

The new shelter will feature an in-house surgery room so they can do spay and neuter surgeries on location.

The 10,000 square foot facility will more than double the shelter's current space.

Karen Jennings, Director of the Jefferson City Animal Shelter said, "We will be able to keep sick animals from the others animals. It'll just be a lot more user friendly. We'll have more space for training and education."

Jennings hopes construction begins within a week and weather permitting, they can move into the building in spring.

Funding was made possible through a half-cent sales tax in Jefferson City. Donations from the community were also accepted.

Original Story:

A groundbreaking is taking place Wednesday morning for the new Jefferson City Animal Shelter building.

The nearly $2 million project has been years in the making.

Funding is made possible through a half-cent sales tax in Jefferson City. Donations from the community were also accepted.

Several services will now be offered in-house and will save the city an estimated $50,000 every year.

Groundbreaking is scheduled at 9 a.m. at the Hyde Park Complex.
