Teachers and students used to recite it every morning before school started.

But now some schools across the U.S. don't recite the Pledge of Allegiance because they fear a lawsuit over religious beliefs.

So do Mid-Missouri schools recite the pledge?

KRCG's Facebook crew spoke with a number of private and public schools Thursday to find out.

Callaway Hills kindgarten students recite the Pledge of Allegiance every morning before school starts.

"If were going to survive as a country we have an obligation to teach our students that they have to work out their differences and they also have to learn how to respect each other. The pledge is a reminder of that obligation,” Callaway Hills Principal Dr. Ramona Dobson said.

Principal Dobson said schools that do not recite the pledge of allegiance are not doing their job.

"I think we're neglecting are responsibilities to those kids a little bit if we don't teach them to say the pledge, to know some our country songs, and those kinds of things,” Dr. Dobson said.

Every private and public school official I talked to Thursday told me their school recites the Pledge of Allegiance.

"As an educator I feel that we try to teach the students to be respectful and to be good citizens. The perfect way to do that is to stand up and say the pledge every morning,” New Bloomfield Kindergarten Teacher Marci Watson said.

Not only does her class recite the pledge, Watson also teaches them about our flag.

"We teach them all about the flag; like what each symbol means and what they stand for,” Watson said.

But they're some schools that don't recite the pledge of allegiance, like the Oberlin Public School District in Ohio.

There have even been lawsuits over the Pledge of Allegiance that wen to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In 2004 the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear a case challenging the words "under God" in the pledge.
