JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- 2,500 boy scouts and their leaders from across mid Missouri took part in the "good turn project" Saturday.

Saturday morning the volunteers went door to door looking for filled bags of food to help those in need.

Scouts in Jefferson City sorted the food at the Samaritan Center.

Boxes lined tables for the different foods collected.

Leader said the event helps teach boys the value of helping others.

"So the Samaritan Center has a lot of food to give away to people," boy scout Tyler Richardson said.

"I feel like it's a kind of responsibility for me to help the community that I live in," boy scout Jesse Smith said.

"everyone should always try to help their community and help other people out,” scout leader Karl Schulte said.  “That’s the meaning of brotherhood and sisterhood in this world; we're all Americans helping each other."

Prior to Sunday more than 90,000 door tags were placed on homes in central and northeast Missouri  reminding residents to support the drive and help those in need.

The scouts collected about 16,000 pounds of food Sunday at the Samaritan center.
