ELDON, MO. -- Update: Thurs. March 3rd 3:52 p.m.:

Investigators still haven’t determined the cause of a fire that destroyed an Eldon apartment complex.

12 of the apartment’s 16 units are a total loss.

The fire started Wednesday afternoon about 2 p.m. in the 600 block of East Jemphrey Street.

One man cut his hand on a broken window while checking on other residents.

No one else was hurt.

Investigators have few leads on the cause of the fire.

Eldon Fire Chief Randy Vernon said, “It’s currently under investigation.  The State Fire Marshal’s Office had investigators down last night.  I haven’t heard anything further.”

The Jefferson City Red Cross assisted the homeless victims of the Eldon fire.

Some of the fire victims lost all of their possessions.

Update: Wed. March 2nd 3:22 p.m.:

Crews at the scene of a large fire in Eldon tell KRCG that the fire is under control.

The apartment manager tells KRCG everyone is accounted for from the 13 occupied apartments.

Fire crews have knocked down the flames but heavy smoke continues to billow from the building.

Original Story:

Fire fighters are battling a fire at an apartment building in Eldon.

Crews got the call just before 2 p.m. to respond to 600 East Jemphrey Street in Eldon.

Those who called 911 told dispatchers there was a large plume of smoke in the area and that flames could be seen shooting from roof of the building.

Mike Clayton with radio station Mix 92.7 said the building on fire is the Fountain Apartment Complex and that the building has 16 units and two stories.

Clayton said it appears the fire is spreading throughout the entire building but that residents tell him everyone got out safely.

Eldon’s fire department is calling in help from nearby fire districts to help fight the fire.

George Wyrick of Eldon  provided cell phone video of the fire to KRCG.
