JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri Governor Jay Nixon is planning to work the day after Thanksgiving.

Nixon is scheduled to meet Friday morning with military veterans and workers at a veterans home in Mount Vernon. The governor then plans to hold a discussion about travel safety with the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Springfield.

Missouri governors traditionally have granted state workers the day off on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Nixon didn't do that this year. Canceling the vacation day saves money primarily because some employees such as prison guards who must work won't get to choose whether to claim extra time off or accept holiday bonus pay.
