Former Missouri Running Back Derrick Washington has been ordered to appear in court at all future hearings in felony sexual assault and domestic violence cases.
Boone County Judge Deborah Daniels Thursday morning increased Washington's bond from $1,000 to $10,000 for the two misdemeanor charges, but she rejected a prosecutor's request to set a higher bond in the felony case.
The one-time Tiger captain is accused of entering a former Missouri tutor's closed bedroom while visiting her roommate and assaulting the woman in her sleep.
Two weeks after those charges were filed in late August, Washington was charged with two counts of domestic assault after an ex-girlfriend said he hit her in the face five to 10 times and choked her during a late-night argument.
Prosecutors increased Washington’s bond because they consider him a danger to the community, not because he is a possible flight risk.
“Anytime someone has a felony case and then they get a new case, we believe the bond is insecure because they are a danger to the community," Assistant Prosecutor Andrea Hayes said. "In the domestic assault case, there were injuries to the victim. He was only arrested for one count. We charged him with two counts. He definitely needed a higher bond in that case for that reason.”
Defense attorneys said raising the amount of bond for Washington was standard procedure.
“In a case like this, a standard bond was set at the jail," Defense attorney Bogdan Susan said. "The prosecutor filed a motion to increase the bond because he was already on bond when he was arrested for the new offense.”
Coach Gary Pinkel kicked Washington off the team before the season started.
Washington’s next hearing is set for early November.
