COLUMBIA, MO. -- The new Ellis Fischel Cancer Center got a second chance for funding in Columbia.

It took University of Missouri's Board of Curators 15 minutes to unanimously vote on the matter Friday at University Hall by the MU baseball fields.

MU President Gary Forsee asked the Board of Curators to issue $30 million in revenue bonds to help pay for a new cancer facility.

Initial plans for a new cancer hospital called for a $52 million expansion with a new building next to University Hospital.

State lawmakers failed to fund the plan this session; however, there were some matching funds available to build the center.

Some of the curators were out of town for the meeting, but called in to participate.

The current facility, on Business Loop 70, is about 70 years old.
