Nearly five years after the Taum Sauk Reservoir failed, Ameren/UE announced Wednesday that the replacement reservoir is generating electricity.

The reservoir breach on Profitt Mountain in Iron County in December, 2005 sent more than a billion gallons of water into nearby Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park and the Black River.

The park superintendent, his wife and their three children, were swept out of their home, but survived.

Ameren agreed to a $180 million settlement with the state.

Ameren says new safety features, including continuous video monitoring and an overflow release system will prevent another failure.
