JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- While their issue was not on Tuesday's ballot, one group was out in force hoping to get the Jefferson City smoking ban measure on a later ballot.

Volunteers with "Smoke Free JC" gathered signatures at Capital City polling places Tuesday.

Organizers plan to get at least 1,000 signatures and then take the petition to the Jefferson City Council.

"This is merely to put the issue on the ballot. Its not voting one way or another, yes or no," Smoke Free JC volunteer Felicia Poettgen said. "We just want it to go to a vote of the people and see how favorable it is. And the response we've gotten has been really, really good."

The group saod 90 percent of Jefferson City residents they've heard from are in favor of the city going smoke free.

Organizers will be at Arris' Pizza Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. collecting more signatures.
