JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A fired gubernatorial aide who raised concerns about deleted e-mails is now urging Missouri lawmakers to strengthen the Sunshine Law.

Attorney Scott Eckersley settled a lawsuit last year against former Gov. Matt Blunt and several staff members that had alleged he was wrongly fired and defamed. Neither side admitted fault.

Eckersley testified Tuesday to a House committee in support of a bill that would require public officials to be trained on the provisions of Missouri's open records and meetings law. It also would raise penalties for violations.

House member Tim Jones, of Eureka, says he is not sure if his bill can make it through the Legislature this year.
