COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- A first-of-its kind survey puts Missouri in the middle of the pack nationally in the number of farms raising organically produced crops and livestock.

The new report by the National Agricultural Statistics Service says Missouri had 197 organic farms that produced $9.3 million worth of commodities in 2008.

It ranks Missouri 20th in the nation in terms of the number of organic farms. The state placed well behind the national leaders of California and Wisconsin, which when combined had more than one-quarter of all organic farms. But the only neighboring states with more organic farms than Missouri were Illinois and Iowa.
