Darwin Hindman praised for promoting health, physical activity

COLUMBIA -- First Lady Michelle Obama gave a nod to Columbia's outgoing mayor yesterday.

During a speech about her initiative to fight childhood obesity, Mrs. Obama specifically praised Mayor Darwin Hindman's work to build a system of walkways and bikeways in Columbia.

"That will connect business and shopping centers," she said, "to schools, parks and neighborhoods."

The First Lady praised Hindman and other mayors who have taken steps to promote physical activity and health in their city.

"I think we may be ahead of some other communities," said Hindman. "We've encouraged good health, physical activity and alternative transportaiton for a long time. But there are lessons to learn and more ideas to share."
