Students and faculty at Eugene Elementary gathered Tuesday to support one of their own, a sixth grade student who was diagnosed with leukemia this summer.
EUGENE -- But they had interesting way of showing they care.
It was an assembly unlike any other. Students and staff at Eugene Elementary gathered in the gym to watch Principal Dan Smith and sixth grade teacher Kevin Barger get their heads shaved.
But the assembly was more than just fun. Smith and Barger competed to raise the most money for Braden Morff.
Braden was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in August and has lost his hair after undergoing aggressive chemotherapy.
"Its the most aggressive leukemia, but its also the leukemia that's easier to treat," says Braden's father Brian Morff.
Braden is now cancer free and has been in remission for two months. He will, however, go through a couple more months of aggressive chemo.
Braden hopes to be back at school with his friends shortly after.
Eugene Elementary raised just over $745 for Braden and his family, who say this support is overwhelming.
"Just seeing all the kids and their support for Braden...it really means a lot to him," says Brian.
Gym teacher Kevin McDonald and seven other students, with their parents permission, threw their hair in the ring, shaving their heads for Braden.
Kids could also donate $5 to the cause and get a purple streak in the hair.
Newly shaved principal Dan Smith says this community-spirit is the norm here at Eugene.
"You know, every kid in this district is important," says Smith. "And Braden is a part of us and has been since he was in kindergarten. Its just a way for us to try to help them in a small way."
