A Moniteau County teenager is dead after an accident Saturday night in Miller County.

MILLER COUNTY -- The Highway Patrol says Nikole Borton, 17, from California, Mo. was driving north on Highway 87, just a couple miles north of Business 54 in Eldon.

That's when an coming truck hit Borton's vehicle head-on.

Highway Patrol reports say the oncoming truck's driver, Joseph Wine, 28, of Olean, was reaching for something in his truck when he cross the center line and hit Borton.

She was pronounced dead later at the hospital.

Wine, the truck driver, and Nikole Borton's passenger, Sara Borton, 21, were both airlifted to Unversity Hospital.

They are both recovering from their injuries and are now in fair condition.

To the girlfriend

He killed a mother and child. When he took his eyes off the road he made a choice to commit murder and what could have been suicide. You might not think that way just because it's him but if my son killed someone and their unborn child because of his carelessness, I would agree he deserved fair punishment. He did not have the intention of hurting anyone but in that second he looked away from the road, he made a decision to hurt someone whether you agree or not. He killed someone's fiancé, daughter, sister, friend and took the life of her unborn daughter, taking two lives from a family. I feel no pain for him and as for him getting hurt too? He deserved what he got and hopefully charges brought against him. He may live with the pain of knowing what he did, but at least he's still living! He not only killed nikole and frankie but he caused pain for a lot of others too. What he did was manslaughter, voluntary or not.

To the girlfriend

I know you need to be supportive of your boyfriend right now, but you probably should have kept your thoughts out of this. Most of the people that knew Nikole and her family are grieving right now because your boyfriend couldn't wait till he got where he was going to pick up whatever it was he was looking for. He could have just as easily pulled off the road into a driveway or dirt road and looked for it. But he chose to put himself and everyone else on the road in danger. Your right about thinking. What if it was your child that had been hit by him. Not only did everyone lose Nikole they lost her unborn child. A little girl that her dad, who by the way was excited about being a father, will never know. Grandparents that will never get to see that little girl grow up. Yes. He will have to live with what he did and that I hope that it does weigh heavily on him for the rest of his life. Facts are.... He was reckless. Yes accidents happen. Everyone knows that road is already bad enough on it's own. It is his fault. He should be charged. Maybe not only will he think next time he's driving but you and everyone he knows will think twice before ducking down to get something off the floor board or digging through that glove box while traveling a high rate of speed. Instead of asking us to think about your boyfriend, how about you thinking about the family of that 17 year old girl and her unborn child that he took away from everyone that cared about them! Maybe you should think before you open your own mouth and make a bad situation worse.

it was an accident

i am joe wines girlfriend and i personally know that he is not a careless person. accidents happen like this all of the time and some just happen to be worse than others. he knows what happened to the driver and he is sorry every minute for this accident. but unfortunately nothing is going to change what happened and nobody will honestly know the true details of what might or might not have happened. it is something that he has to live with for the rest of his life and thats not as easy as you may think. he wasnt under the influence of anything, it was just an accident. im sorry that she lost her life and its something we will think about everyday. but just to remind people, he was also hurt in this accident. its something that could happen to any one of us the moment we get in our car. so im sure that right now its easy to put the blame on him for what happened but what if you were in his position. people need to think of it that way as well and then maybe they could see it from a different point of view. what if it were your lover, child, friend, or whatever that had an accident and someone was killed and they lived...i think you might then look at it in a different light. our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

How many more?

I have personally seen several wrecks on 87. Some have been right in front of my house and some actually landed in my front yard. They just recently did some road work, but it's horrible! Looks like 87 is the project road for everyone that just started making roads "oh you need some practice making roads, go patch a few on 87"........it wouldn't surprise me.

We miss you Nikole!!!

I hope this man knows what he did!! It's painful to wake up to the news of a friend dying because of some idiotic driver that couldn't seem to pay attention. Because of him, we are all missing a great, happy, loving friend!! We are all having a really rough time believing that you are really gone. We miss you Nikole!! Prayers are out for you and your family!! Much love

Moniteau County teen dead after weekend car crash

It isn't the road.. it is the ID 10 T drivers who feel that it is ok to drive drunk, dig through their glove boxes for things and yak on cell phones.. the police should be pushing for charging these people instead of just saying "Oh Well" I have seen more crashes on this road due to stupid actions on the individual's part than problems with the actual road... remember the crash several years go? A drunk driver with his 10 year old son in the truck, crossed the center line and hit a car load of teenagers, killing most of them and then he promptly goes home and takes the keys away from his 17 year old because he didn't want his son to drive drunk... the teenagers he killed? was his son's friends... I think it is time to start charging people and making them responsible for their OWN actions instead of sticking to the "good ol' boy" system.. make them take responsibility for their actions. This guy.. needs charged and more than reckless driving.. anyone stupid enough to go digging for something on the floor board or in the glove-box.. while flying down the road at 60 miles an hour... needs a reality check and not "oh he has to live with it".. put his butt in jail or better yet make him work as an orderly cleaning up the blood and such in an ER somewhere... so he can see first hand what his actions cause...

Tragic...

How many more lives will be lost before this highway is reconstructed?? This has to be one of the most dangerous roads in Missouri.. Anyone else agree??
