JEFFERSON CITY -- Some Jefferson City High School students salsa danced their way to a better understanding of spanish culture Friday afternoon.

Several spanish classes at the high school got to learn the meringe. The dancing is part of a celebration teachers did for Mexico's Day of the Dead.

Many Latin American countries also celebrate the Day of the Dead, which is a day used to remember loved ones who have passed away.

One of the Spanish teachers' wives taught the students. She says dancing is an important part of many hispanic cultures.

"When we learn the dances, I think it helps us understand the language and the people much better,” said Allison Johnson, dance instructor.

At the end of the class students competed in a dance competition to see who could present the dance routine the best.

Maybe this won't surprise you, but several of the finalists were Jefferson City Jay football players.

Thanks for the coverage, it was an awesome activity that the students enjoyed. Just a minor detail, but it was actually the Merengue that they learned.
