Missouri politicians are offering their condolences after a shocking turn of events at the Ft. Hood Texas military base.
House Armed Service Commitee Chairman Ike Skelton said in a statement, ”We would like to express our condolences to the soldiers, families, and civilians of the Fort Hood community. Our nation asks much of the men and women of our military, as well as their families, and we never expect such senseless violence to materialize at their homes.
"This was a terrible tragedy, and we will do everything we can to support the Fort Hood family."
Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder sent out a statement for Army specialist Keara Bono who was shot in the back of her left shoulder.
“Today, our nation mourns for those who have lost their lives in this senseless act of violence. At this hour, we know at least one Missourian, Keara Bono, 21, of Independence, was injured in the shootings.
“I offer my thoughts and prayers to Keara and her family, and to families of those who are dead and wounded.”
ono called her family in Independence, Mo. during the shooting.
"He could hear shots, he could hear her screaming, said Keara’s dad Steve Bone. “He didn't know what went on and then he um, the phone went dead."
Bono is stationed with a unit out of Topeka, Kansas. She works in human resources and was supposed to arrive in Iraq in December.
Her family says they realized the risk she would take while working overseas, but never thought she'd get wounded by a fellow soldier.
A military psychiatrist allegedly opened fire at the base in Ft. Hood, Tx. At least 12 people were killed and dozens of others wounded.
