JEFFERSON CITY -- The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating how a stranded motorist was hit by a Jefferson City police car.

The highway patrol says the person was pulled over along Highway 50 West just east of the 179 exit. They also said the man was standing on the eastbound side of the highway.

A Jefferson City police cruiser was en route to help the pedestrian, but ended up hitting that person, who was in the road. It happened just before 10 p.m. last night.

A trooper says, that the person hit has been injured and was flown to University Hospital in Columbia.

Police say the incident may not be a simple strandard motorist case.

Authorities are scheduled to release a statement later today.

Yes, some comments are a lil much! I know a police officer, and he would never hurt anyone on purpose! We really shouldn't judge... never know when your gonna need them! They are human and have families just like us! I pray that everthing works out for this officer!!!! ;)

SORRY MY MISTAKE.....I'M SORRY I'M SORRY I'M SORRY. I wont be repeating this mistake.

A great example of how humans makes mistakes...big and small.

Correction

Posted by L Jenk, Jefferson City - Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.

Sorry Tanya....my previous statement was meant for Stacy.

I am literally sicken by some of these negative comments. I mean....truely speechless. This kind of small, simple mindedness is also what has lead to prejudices and bigotry. It's truely pethatic.....all this HATE. This was not a hate crime or an intentional "accident". How is it that someone going on a call to maintain the safety of this city is suddenly criminalized for hitting someone in the middle of the highway with thier vehicle. This person wouldn't have even been in the middle of the highway if it hadn't been for his alleged intoxication or purchase of illegal drugs. THANK GOD!....it was a Jefferson City police officer rather than a mother (like me)....where the resulting scenario could have been much more devistating. You people have know idea what it takes to PROTECT & SERVE. I also know this police officer....very very well......and we're very forutnate to have him on our streets. And if you're ever in a situation that is cause for an officer to come to your aide.....you could only be lucky enough to get this man.

To Ms Jenk!

First of all I would like to say I don't know what happened and don't care. Just hope the person is gonna be ok.

Second of all Ms. Jenk's called someone out which I think is really disrespectful, after reading the comments all the poster wrote was: "Things happen! Nobody is at fault! Shouldn't judge because we were not there".

I do think Ms. Jenk should read before she passes judgements.

Thank you and have a good day!

Pedestrian Hit

Posted by Court Marshall, Central Missouri - Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 2:34 p.m.

I personally know this JC police officer. He's college educated. Comes from a christian family-a family of educators. He's an excellent officer. He attends to detail. Everything is done by the book. He's fair, honest, and a goodhearted PERSON. I am sickened by the negative comments made by people who have issues with the law. He was simply responding to a call of a non-moving vehicle on the highway. Let's ask ourselves the real questions. Was this pedestrian under the influence? Why didn't this pedestrian remain in vehicle? Or be at safe location near the vehicle? What was the reason for this pedestrian to leave the vehicle and move across a state highway in an unsafe manner? Why was this pedestrian standing on the highway? Please get the facts before you make ridiculous assumptions or comments. This is a very unfortunate accident for all involved.

SHUT UP OR MOVE

Posted by Jacob Schneider, Jeff City, MO - Sunday, November 08, 2009 at 12:55 p.m.

First, the PO was responding to THAT person's request for assistance, secondly, why was THAT person in the LEFT lane? you know what lane that is?? THE FAST LANE!! The PO gave the vehicle space and was probably trying to get a scope of the situation by driving by. The report doesn't say how much traffic was on the highway, and possibly the PO was trying to avoid causing an accident by slowing down. How many of you hypocrites don't get over for emergency vehicles or how many of you speed? You are just as responsible as the PO is. Most of you would probably thought it a deer and kept driving. Our PD and FD risk their lives to aid us, and recently alot more. The severity of their work and chances they take should be allowed some tolerance. If you don't feel like they do a good job, why don't you become a PO and then comment when you make a mistake!!

I am sure the person that got hit will get a few million from the city. So now they will tax you-us the people to make up for the mistake.

Supposed to be perfect

Posted by ron carr, jefferson city - Friday, November 06, 2009 at 10:32 p.m.

Point here is that law enforcement (LE) is supposed to be as near to perfect as possible. Will we ever know the whole story, no. will the officer loose his/her job, no. Will any type of charges be filed if found in the wrong, no. I've come within inches of being broadsided by LE crossing the median several different times. Now, I don't even slow down, I could cause an accident by doing so. Let them get some common sense and drop the ego trip of 'must get there at all cost'. As long as the person wasn't laying down in the road, he was visible in headlights. Doesn't matter if drunk or high. If LE couldn't see him, LE was driving too fast for what he/she was attempting. Absolutely a personal injury suite against the city on this one. And hopefully a loss of employment for the LE. But we have a police chief who doesn't believe in citizens rights, so doubt we'll ever see true justice.

This "COP" is a person...a human being...people!! Do you actually believe that someone...the type of person who has pledged to protect and serve....would hit another human...for that matter...another animal on purpose??? W*O*W! I mean really....this person is automatically guilty b/c he/she is a cop...Tanya???? WTF? This is a person with feelings and this accident will be on this person's concience for the rest of their life. Their life!! I hope and pray for the victim and his family along with the psyche of the police officer who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time on their way to remove a stalled vehicle ON the highway. (on the other side of the median) and NO I'M NOT A COP.

I talked to a friend last night who saw the cop hit the guy. The guy was running across the road and the cop braked to avoid hitting him but the pedestrian couldn't be avoided. The guy who was hit could have been drinking himself.

Hellooo...it said the Pedestrian was in the road....on the Hwy. So, you're telling me you wouldn't hit someone standing in the middle of the road in the dark??? Do you drive with Night Vision goggles on???

You have to be pretty drunk, high or stupid to stand in the middle of the Hwy or any road in the dark.

aren't police supposed to PROTECT and SERVE?

Posted by mark smith, jc - Friday, November 06, 2009 at 11:14 a.m.

Knowing Jeff City police we will NEVER know the truth - Not from them. They will try to cover this up, or blame the victim. Anything to avoid bad press.

Wow..

Posted by Jane Rhode, JC - Friday, November 06, 2009 at 11:05 a.m.

Wow you are quick to jump on the police. Im not a police officer but Im greatful to them for putting there lives on the line every day for our safety. Do the JCPD police cars have cameras? Should be pretty open and shut once the tape is reviewed.

Pedestrian Hit

Posted by Fulton Resident, Fulton - Friday, November 06, 2009 at 11:03 a.m.

It's a tragic accident however, it may not be the officer's fault. Sometimes it's hard to see at night, the person may be wearing dark clothing and with the on coming vehicles and the headlights it may be hard to see a person. I've come close to hitting a person in the dark. The person was IN the road, wearing dark clothing, and with on coming traffic I just about didn't see the person. I'm sure the officer wasn't planning on hitting the person and I'm sure he feels bad about it. Once the investigation is complete I'm sure the truth will come out on how this may have happened whether it be the officer not paying attentino or just a tragic accident.

What?

Posted by Stacy Garrard, Jefferson City - Friday, November 06, 2009 at 9:05 a.m.

How do you hit a pedestrian, especially being a police officer. Jeff citys finest ladies and gentlemen. Eyes maybe were not on the road, cell phone or radio more important that safety. Who knows and we never will know because we live in Jefferson City Missouri, surely the offender will not be treated as such because he has a badge and they are infoulable and incapable of wrong doing. I am not sure how any one else feels on this matter but prosecution for careless and inprudent driving and vehicular assault or something needs to be done the Police are not above wrong doing as we have proven right here in Jefferson City in the past. Something needs to be done about this or proof of double standards for our fine police department will be made evident. If I would have hit the person I would already be behind bars? Did he even have a breath analysist done, or a sobriety check. Surely not, they are above that they are the law!! enough said.

HUH?

Posted by C H, MO - Friday, November 06, 2009 at 6:45 a.m.

Why were they in the road? Maybe the officer should have been paying more attention.
