COLUMBIA -- Students at two Columbia elementary schools were the first students to get free H1N1 vaccines from the Boone County Health Department. All vaccinations were voluntary.

More than 100 students at both Benton and West Boulevard Elementary Schools stood in line for the H1N1 vaccines.

The free vaccines were available in both injection and FluMist form.

Parents were encouraged to accompany their child as health care providers administered either the FluMist or the injection.

Erin Lampkin is the mother of two children at West Boulevard Elementary School and is expecting her third child in January. Lampkin’s children were not eligible for FluMist because they received seasonal flu vaccines about two weeks ago.

“As fast as its spreading and considering that I am pregnant, I just think for their safety and the safety of the other kids in the school it’s a good vaccine to have," Lampkin said. "Based on their pediatrician’s recommendation, it would be safe instead of sorry.”

Boone County health officials said they chose Benton and West Boulevard Elementary Schools for the first round of school vaccinations because of their small size and because both schools share the same school nurse.

School administrators say their goal is to make free H1N1 vaccinations available across the entire school district as soon as possible.
