GASCONADE COUNTY -- Update: Nov. 3 at 4:14 p.m.

Three-year-old Allison Schneider died Tuesday after being hit by a stray bullet. Police say she was walking with her mother and a friend near the friend's home, just south of Owensville on Route EE.

Neighbors say the group had gone outside to look at some horses.

Gasconade County Sheriff Randy Esphorst says a man was target shooting at a house just down the road. A stray .9mm bullet traveled more than 350 yards across a field and struck Allison in the left temple.

"So you couldn't directly see from where he was shooting to where the little girl was,” said Esphorst. “If you stood in one area and I stood in the other, we wouldn't be able to see each other.

Allison was life flighted to a hospital in St. Louis, the bullet still lodged in her head.

The man authorities believe fired the shot is being cooperative and turned over his handgun to authorities.

Sheriff Esphorst says no charges have been filed against the shooter, but the investigation is ongoing.

Update: Nov. 3 at 1:07 p.m.

A 3-year-old rural Owensville girl is reported to be in critical condition after being hit in the head by a stray bullet.

The Gasconade County Sheriff said the incident happened yesterday, just south of Owensville, while the girl was walking with two other children on her own property.

Allison Schneider was flown to St. Louis Children's Hospital and X-rays showed the bullet was still lodged in her head, according to Dave Marner of the Gasconade County Republican.

The sheriff said the shot came from an adult male neighbor who was shooting at a target more than 360 yards from the girl.

Eight .9mm casings were eventually recovered and eight rounds were fired, the sheriff said. It has not been confirmed if the victim was wounded by a .9mm projectile. He turned over a nine millimeter handgun to authorities.

The sheriff said the investigation is ongoing and the shooter is being cooperative with police questioning.

Terrible Accident

Posted by K S, Jefferson City MO - Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 2:37 a.m.

So sorry for your loss. My prayers are with both families, forever changed, forever scarred. We never know how long we have or how long we have a loved one. Hug your child today. Call your parents, tell them you love them, if you are fortunate enough to still have them. Each day is a gift, how often we forget.

SAD!!!

The first thing that I would like to say is my heartfelt condolences go out to both families, especially to the family of the little girl. Secondly, I would like to say that Mr.Smith in my opinion is a moron. If guns and hunting were illegal in this country, then this country would not exist. Our forfathers used guns and hunting to found this country and feed themselves. Gun ownership in this country is the one reason that every little piss ant country in the world has not tried to invade us. They are smart enough to know that the average Joe or Josephine would fight back. That being said, the Gentleman that was target shooting showed poor judgement in where he was shooting, nothing more. This little girl could have been killed by a distracted driver talking/texting on a phone. This man will have to live the rest of his life knowing that he took an innocent life because of his actions. To the Grandmother, find it in your heart to forgive this man because it was an accident, and may God above send angels to comfort you and your family in this time sorrow. Respectfully

Thats what....

Thats what shooting ranges are for. Use them. Either that or get sued for wreckless endangerment. And by the way, I buy my meat from the grocery store. You need to read closer this person was target shooting, not hunting. You haven't lived till you have had to dodge bullets in your own yard. I am sure you know what I mean, Ms. CH.

Owensville girl shot

My heart goes out to this family for their loss. I know that both families are suffering. This just happened to my grandson in Sullivan. He lives in the city limits by the elementary school. We were more fortunate than this family as he is still alive but has been through 2 surgeries and who knows what the future holds for him. I am not against guns, am an NRA member, but people who do not use good judgement or common sense with weapons should pay for their actions. Bullets can travel farther than you can see so if you do not shoot into something, it will hit something somewhere.

So sorry....

First let me express how sorry I am about your loss. How tragic. I would love to see laws passed in regards to things like this. Only because we have dealt with braindead neighbors shooting guns in the direction of land where kids play. For too many years people have just gone out and target shooted with no thought as to where those bullets go. Country neighbors are on top of each other now and even though its legal to shoot in the country, laws need to be put into place about shooting within so many feet of another residence. Maybe you could channel your hurt into doing something good?? I know I have tried to get something like this done in the past. Again, please accept my condolences, I can not imagine what you are going through.

I, agree with what you say. That was my grandchild that was killed. There has to be a punishment for my granddaughter's death.

Owensville update

We need to be praying for both families! This man did not mean to hit this little girl. Instead of fighting over gun issues, maybe we should work a little harder on safety. Or maybe being a little less judgmental and have more understanding and forgiveness.

It actually was an accident

Posted by Susan Hatcher, Owensville, MO - Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.

I live not far from there. As far as I found out there was a hedge in the way and he didn't see them there. He didn't know the kids were there and it was over 360 yards away. It was an accident. I'm sorry to the family and to the guy. He'll have to live with it for the rest of his life. But at least he's not fighting the police on it.

When

Posted by A. Citizen, HS MO - Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at 5:47 p.m.

When are people going to get it through their heads that just because you live in the country does not make it OK to just shoot anywhere. Bullets ricochet and they travel a long ways. This is just heartbreaking. My condolences.

THIS WAS A ACCIDENT

This man never meant to hurt this baby I am sure. None of us could probably imagine what he feels like! I feel so bad for this little girls family.

Hunting is how some people eat. Where do you think meat comes from?

So sad

Posted by So Sad, Missouri - Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at 4:35 p.m.

To "John Smith":

Your comment is ridiculous. This is why people should practice safer gun use, but guns and hunting should not be illegal. I do not own a gun or hunt, but see why both are fine, especially hunting. I am not sure what would happen if hunting was illegal, but I know driving on the roadways would be much more dangerous than the already are.

Anyways, I feel and pray for the victim/family and the shooter. Both parties will have to live with this terrible tragedy for the rest of their life. Such a tragedy and I hope they can make their way through this with the help of their family and friends and from up above.

Really sad

This is why guns, and hunting, should be illegal.
