COLUMBIA -- Fourth Ward Councilman Jerry Wade predicts that he and his colleagues will choose eight of the nine board members for Columbia’s new Police Review Board during Monday night’s city council meeting.

Members of Columbia’s Human Rights Commission will choose the 9th and final member of the Police Review Board.

City leaders narrowed their candidate list from about 50 to 17 finalists.

Columbia Police Review Board members will serve on an independent review panel for alleged police brutality or misconduct.

“What I’m really looking for, is a mix of candidates not just a single candidate," Wade said. "I want every candidate to be able to think in terms of analyzing information in objective behavior, sort of stepping aside from the emotions that always get attached to these.”

Each new member of Columbia’s Police Review Board will serve a term of three years.

Members cannot be employed by the City of Columbia.
